entry idea

Thursday, February 27, 2014

The other day I was reading Holly Mathis' blog and came across this image of an entry in a home she had just completed.  I love the casual style.
It gave me an idea for our entry, which I've been struggling with.  The entry in this house is really long.
There's a longer wall that continues on down the left side where the staircase is.  You're going to have to trust me that it's there.  Apparently I forgot to take a picture of that wall, and now it's too late.  I hate when that happens!  Oh well.  That's where it seems to make the most sense to put an entry table.  So, having another table by the front door would look weird to me.

If I went with the hook and basket idea I could have something like this.
What do we think?  We likey?  I think I'm digging it.
My mom is coming in late tonight to visit for a few days.  I'm going to get her to help me slap this together before Izzy's birthday party this weekend.  Which should really be the LEAST of my worries right now, seeing as how I've still not done much of anything to prep for this birthday party.  But, I am happy to report I finally have bunnies rented for the party!!!  Up top!  I very narrowly escaped letting Izzy down on that part.  That was the one thing she wanted and was the one thing I promised.  I can just picture the sad face right now.  Phew!  Glad to have that taken care of.  Now Please Lord, make sure these bunnies actually show up!

bamboo roman shades

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Well we finally have a lot more privacy over at our house now.  Bamboo roman shades are up, and looking pretty darn awesome!

Before we had the bamboo blinds up it was not only exhibitionist central, but the windows looked SO blah.  Here's the living room before.

The blinds add so much interest, texture, and gives it a much warmer feel against all the white.

Same deal going on in the breakfast nook.  Before.

So pretty, right?!

Brand & Color - We needed custom made blinds to fit our windows, so we went with Blinds.com Budget Woven Wood Shades in Antigua Natural.  I can honestly say I am beyond thrilled.  The color is EXACTLY what I was after, and the fit is perfection.  We went with an inside mount on all of the windows but one of the bedroom windows.  The one window had an arch so we did an outside mount, installing it above the arch.

We had our bamboo shades made with a light filtering privacy liners in the main living areas and blackout liners in the bedrooms.  Hello sweet, sweet sleep.  The blinds below have the light filtering privacy liners.

Quality - I'll tell you I was slightly concerned with how the quality was going to be when I ordered since I went with a "budget" shade.  The price was much lower than other prices I found through special orders at the home improvement store and other online stores; so I figured quality might be lacking.  NOT AT ALL THE CASE.  I honestly let out a sigh of relief when I opened the packaging and checked them out.  "Thank you, Lord!"  They are very well made, and look and work significantly better than the blinds I bought off the shelf for a previous home.

Installation - A breeze.  Easily a one person job.  Even with a 5 year old and 15 month old running around your ankles.  And I LOVE that each of the blinds comes labeled with the room you're using them in.  Talk about a time saver!

If you're looking for woven wood blinds for your home, definitely check out Blinds.com.  It makes such a difference having shades made to your window's exact measurements.  Before I found them I was seriously considering going with off the shelf shades that would have been a foot too short in our bedroom because I didn't think I could find the style and color I wanted in my price range.  I'm guessing our neighbors would be thrilled to know I didn't go that route!

Are you guys fans of bamboo shades?  Do you have them in your homes?  After having them I don't think I could ever go back to slated wood blinds.  At least not unless I have someone to come in and dust them for me every two days ;)

UPDATED 7/13/14

Some had asked about how the arched window in Sam's room looked with an outside mount.  Here ya go!

You really can't tell it's an outside mount until you pull the curtains away.

Here you can see the arch of the window.  I mounted the blinds about 3 inches from the top of the arch.

Disclosure: I did receive product at a discounted price; however, all opinions are completely my own.

happy 5th birthday to my sweet izzy

Thursday, February 20, 2014

Can I sound like our mothers for a bit???  Ok, good!  Five years ago today I was in the hospital bringing this sweet little girl into the world.

She was more amazing than I could have ever imagined, and she still blows me away every. single. day.  Izzy has the best laugh, the best don't-make-a-lick-of-sense jokes, is the world's best snuggler (and still asks for them several times a day), is so incredibly expressive, perfectly stubborn, and always knows exactly the right time to tell me she loves me.  She is such a joy.  I truly am so blessed to be her mommy.  I've learned WAY more about myself having her.  Isabelle has taught me so much about life.  And right now all I want to do is go crawl into her bed and snuggle with her :)

You know how you can fall down a rabbit hole when you start going through your baby's pictures?  Yep.  That just happened to me the last two hours.  TWO hours folks.
In prepping for her birthday party this year, I asked what would make it special for her.  Her response was Grandma and bunnies to pet and love and snuggle and feed.  "Done!" I say.  Well... the Grandma part is a done deal, but can I just tell you how stinking hard it is to find bunnies to rent for a party?  I can get a ponies, every other barnyard animal that exists, a squirrel on water skis, but just rabbits???  Nope.  Ughhh.  I've literally gotta pull a rabbit out of my hat here.  If anyone knows of someone in the Houston area that rents bunnies, let me know!!!

Well now that I'm all emotional, I'm going to sneak in her room for some snuggles.  I can't help it!
Happy Birthday baby girl!  Mommy loves you with all her heart!!!!!

temporary decorating tips for renters

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

I wanted to group together some of the decorating tips I used when we were renting this last year.  When renting a house, there is usually not much you are allowed to do, or if you're not going to be there long term, not much you want to do to change its appearance.  Making it "you" can sometimes be tough.  While it's technically someone else's house, it's your home and you should love it while you're there.
All of these projects were completely temporary and were easy to remove without damage once we were ready to move on.  Click on the titles to be linked to more info on each project.

There you have it!  Some quick and easy changes anyone can do to make your rental feel more like you.
I will say, the one major thing I learned while renting this time was to go ahead and decorate.  Put up your photos.  Drag out your knick knacks.  I knew we were only going to be there under a year before I was going to have to box it all up, but it made it so much more comfortable and enjoyable while we were there.  We didn't decorate at all the first time we rented (other than the Izzy's room since we brought her home from the hospital there), and I can honestly say we dreaded being in that house.  It was a depressing place to be.  A few photos and bits of us would have made a huge difference in how we felt while living there.  Go ahead and do it!
Do you guys have any favorite tips for decorating when renting?  Let me know!

we're in the new house!

Thursday, February 13, 2014

Totally didn't expect to be away from blogging so long!  Good news is we're finally in the new house!!!  This move was a booger.  It was suppose to be ubber easy since we literally just moved to the neighborhood across the street.  We did a huge chunk of it ourselves (minus heavy furniture and appliances) and wouldn't you know, it rained EVERY DAY.  We're still sorting through boxes, but it's finally a little less chaotic around here.
Some of you may have already seen some of the progress from Instagram.  The kitchen pendants are up and look awwwesome!
Mike got me the kitchen counter stools for my birthday.  Eeeee!!!  Love them.  And they say diamonds are a girl's best friend.  Pffff.
The chandelier from our Kansas house was hung and looks right at home.
And curtains are slowly getting put up.
Once I find a camera other than my phone, I'll show you guys some progress photos.  It's gonna be a while until everything has it's happy place, but I think getting there is part of the fun.  Even if the trip looks like a hot mess!
Also, I want to thank you guys for all of your sweet comments about Ruffino.  He was such a sweet boy, and a day still doesn't go by that we don't miss him.  So THANK YOU for your kind words :)
Ok, I'm off to go haul more boxes out to the curb.  I'll be peeking out the window trying not to be seen as I pray the trash men take it all.  They didn't last time :/
